To keep your clothes in tiptop shape you need to know how to remove stains that just can’t be fixed in the washing machine. Here are my tips to getting them out and ensuring that you get longevity out of your clothing investment.

Stained collar

Place the stain facing downwards on a piece of white tissue paper. Rub the reverse side of the stain with a circular motion working from the outside of the stain inwards using dry-cleaning solvent. Keep changing the tissue to absorb more and more of the solvent and the stain. Leave the fabric to dry, then using a toothbrush and white soap; gently wash the area of the stain.

Coat care

To keep your coat looking as good as new, empty the pockets after each wear. Never hang it on a hook, instead use a thick, padded hanger where the edges of the hanger are nice and wide for the shoulders.

Blood on wool

The iron and protein content in blood can cause an indelible stain on wool. I would suggest, trying water with a hand-wash liquid from a specialist cleaner. If this doesn’t work you will need it cleaned by a specialist wool dry-cleaner.

Light white deodorant marks

You can buy a special deodorant remover sponge from any pharmacy. There is no need to wet the sponge, just gently wipe the mark until it disappears.

Heavy deodorant stains on t-shirt

Heavy deodorant stains on a t-shirt are a common problem for most people. You will find that they simply don’t come out by throwing your t-shirt in the wash. To help remove the stain, simply use a pre-wash treatment and leave to sit on the t-shirt for 10 minutes before popping in the wash. Use the hottest water that is safe to use on your t-shirt for best results.

Lipstick on linen shirt collar

You can remove lipstick by applying Vaseline petroleum jelly before washing your shirt.
